Portland Spencer Academy is a hub of learning, creativity and exploration, where we aim to provide world class outcomes for the children and pupils who attend. In February 2014 Portland Spencer Academy converted to become an academy within the Spencer Academy Trust.
The school, which resides in a large, urban council estate in Bilborough, has a wonderful environment, both inside and out. All members of our school community take great pride in making our school look inviting and exciting so that our children, parents and carers, and visitors feel safe, welcome and enjoy the Portland experience. We have twelve large classrooms, plus a Foundation Stage Unit which comprises of a 55 place Nursery unit (FS1) and a Reception Unit (FS2). We have a large hall with stage, dining rooms, Pre and Post Teaching rooms, a computer suite, and a nurture space (The Nest). The school has extensive grounds with two playgrounds, trim trail and tyre play area. Each classroom also has its own outdoor area which are used to provide bespoke outdoor learning opportunities.
As of January 2017, we have 365 pupils on roll in main school, with a further 35 children in Foundation 1. There is currently one Nursery (F1) class and a Reception unit (F2) which is equivalent to two classes. We are a two form entry school and so there are twelve classes in the main school of which four are Key Stage 1 and eight in Key Stage 2.
For the community we serve, a large majority of our pupils are from white British backgrounds, with an increasing number of children coming from other ethnic groups, and a number of pupils with EAL (English as an additional language). The number of pupils eligible for free school meals is well above the national average.
We are extremely fortunate to have developed strong parental support, with a high percentage of parents attending open evenings, school productions, theme sharing mornings and school fairs. Parents have also benefitted from the provision of a number of clubs, including: 'Let's Get Cooking'; 'Keeping up with the children – Literacy'; family learning – numeracy; and the FAST Programme.
We offer an extended day for those pupils whose parents work or are in full time education with the provision of a free breakfast club. We also offer a variety of after-school clubs throughout the year. These clubs usually last for six weeks and are offered to all year groups. These clubs are an important aspect of school for us, as they enrich children's social skills and allow children to attend sessions, such as athletics and dance, which they may otherwise not be able to.
Portland is an active school where everyone has a real thirst for learning. We believe that children only have one chance at having a successful start to their education, and all our staff are determined to provide all children and pupils with the very best leaning opportunities. We have the highest expectations of ourselves and the children, particularly in relation to their learning, progress, behaviour and attendance. We expect our children to ASPIRE to achieve and aim high, and provide them with opportunities, skills and belief to reach their full potential, dreams and goals.
As part of our commitment to pupils learning we have introduced the Portland Pact where all of our pupils have the opportunity to ASPIRE. All of the children are rewarded for showing these qualities in their day to day learning and behaviour using the 'Class Dojo' system. Staff and parents are able to communicate daily about the children, and share key learning information, as well as celebrate successes.
The staffing compliment of the school includes our Executive Principal, Head of School, two Assistant Head of Schools, one SENDcO and four members of staff with TLRs. Each member of staff is responsible for a curriculum area. The current staffing is as below:
